From the recording A Rose Cut in Vain
This song is from my forthcoming LP, ‘Love in Stereo’, which is a deliberation on love, hate and other four letter words. There are love songs on the LP, this for sure isn’t one of them.
I’ve come to think of this song as a bookend for a song I wrote and performed many years ago titled ‘You Make Me Sick’ which I wrote at the end of a relationship in my 20s. That one’s a little bitter, as you might imagine from the title. ‘A Rose Cut in Vain’ is similar in sentiment, if not tone, and is written more from the perspective of someone ending a very long relationship. Rest assured, I’m not currently going through a break-up myself. What I may have lacked in personal experience, I had close friends to help shade in the colors. I guess I'm sorry if you can relate to this one too much.
Lyrics
Hey
I don't know how to tell you I love you
After these days and nights
We played at making our way
Just to end up feeling like a fool
Hey
I'm a man like the next one
Who says we won't meet again
Well, maybe one day
I won't feel so betrayed
Love like a rose fades away
But leaves it's thorns, well hey
That's you and me, babe
That's you and me
And what's left is the pain
Love like a rose fades away
A little more each new day
That's you and me, babe,
That's you and me
That's you and me
A rose cut in vain
Just like a rose cut in vain
Hey,
On the street love smells sweet but remember
What blooms and blossoms decays
Over days or decades
Ever fading away
Hey
You can cut me down
But I’ll grow stronger
And I wont be yours to display
In some antique vase
I’ll be on my own way
Love like a rose fades away
But leaves it's thorns, well hey
That's you and me, babe
That's you and me
And what's left is the pain
Love like a rose fades away
A little bit more each new day
That's you and me, babe
That's you and me
That's you and me
A rose cut in vain
Just like a rose cut in vain
Princesses and princes play perfect
But nothing is worse than a rose cut in vain
Diamonds and pearls are best
But nothing shines less than a rose cut in vain
Even the truth from you would do
Nothing comes through a rose is cut in vain
But I won’t hang around upside down
‘Till I fall to the ground like a rose cut in vain
